Optimizing Simultaneous client connections

Wednesday, 11 May 2011 10:24

The Microsoft Dynamics CRM Engineering for Enterprise (MS CRM E2) Team has released a whitepaper on 'Optimizing and Maintaining Client Performance for Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011 and CRM Online'
It's a short document so worth reading in its entirety but (from what I see in the field), the most critical point is the following section, which will dramatically improves load times especially if you use Ajax queries in your forms load. Actually, it's also valid for Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 and IE 6.0 (you can use the same registry settings as for IE 7.0) but is less visible as CRM 4.0 uses less calls in standard.

Configuring Simultaneous Download Sessions
By default, Windows Internet Explorer 7 and earlier versions limit the number of files that you can download at one time to two. Windows Internet Explorer 8 limits the number of files that you can download at one time to six. This change reflects the faster connection speeds that are now typical for most users. Note that for dial-up connections, the limits from earlier versions still apply.

Important The following procedures require modification of the registry, which can create serious problems if the registry is modified incorrectly. As a result, be sure to follow these steps carefully and for added protection, back up the registry before making any changes.
To increase the number of files that can be downloaded at one time to 10

Internet Explorer 7.0
1. Start Registry Editor, and then navigate to the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings
2. On the Edit menu, point to New, click DWORD Value, and then add the following registry values:
Value name: MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server
Value data: 10
Base: Decimal
Value Name: MaxConnectionsPerServer
Value data: 10
Base: Decimal
3. Exit Registry Editor.

Internet Explorer 8.0
1. Start Registry Editor, and then navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\MAIN\FeatureControl\FEATURE_MAXCONNECTIONSPERSERVER
2. On the Edit menu, point to New, click DWORD Value, and then add the following registry value:
Value name: iexplore.exe
Value data: 10
Base: Decimal
Note set this value to the connection limit that you want for HTTP 1.1 connections. By setting the value to 10, you increase the connection limit to 10.
3. Navigate to and select the following subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\MAIN\FeatureControl\FEATURE_MAXCONNECTIONSPER1_0SERVER
4. On the Edit menu, point to New, click DWORD Value, and then add the following registry values:
Value name: iexplore.exe
Value data: 10
Base: Decimal
Note set this value to the connection limit that you want for HTTP 1.1 connections. By setting the value to 10, you increase the connection limit to 10.
5. Exit Registry Editor.

The Microsoft Dynamics CRM "statement of direction" has been updated, you can get it from here (LiveId Login required).
"Statements of direction" are usually very generic but this one is a bit less so than the previous ones.
In Short :

  • A cross browser HTML5 based MS Dynamics CRM is confirmed. (not a real surprise, but still)
  • Next Update (let's call it CRM 5.1 for the time being, as CRM2011 is technically CRM 5.0) is foreseen for Q4 2011; both for Online and On Premise
  • Next Upgrade (let's call it CRM 6.0) is foreseen for Q2 2012; both for Online and On Premise.

It's a really aggressive planning compared to previous releases, so we'll see...

Update Rollup 17 has been released for Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0.

Here's a summary of the fixes:

  • The synchronization process enters an endless loop when you synchronize data in the Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 client for Outlook
  • You experience slow performance when Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 runs a search in the Active Directory environment
  • Exception of type 'System.Web.HttpUnhandledException' was thrown" error message when you try to assign a record to a user after you install Update Rollup 15 in the Turkish version of Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0
  • "This implementation is not part of the Windows Platform FIPS validated cryptographic algorithms" error message when you run the database plug-in assembly in Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0
  • When you cancel a quick find search in Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0, the grid revert to the previous view that was displayed before you run the search. However, if the view contains columns from related entities, incorrect data is displayed.
  • When you click Use Advanced Find to evaluate members in Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0, the marketing list cannot contain more than 5,000 members.
  • After you delete one of the email-addresses of a user in Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0, the email address of a resource in service appointments of the user is lost.
  • When you select a time in a date/time field, such as the Due field of a Microsoft Dynamics CRM task, you receive the following error message:
An error has happened getting the date.
  • Assume that a user is moved to a new business unit in Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0. When you click OK after you select the business unit, the Microsoft Dynamics CRM application becomes unresponsive.
  • In Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0, when you write custom code that uses the addressused value of an activityparty object to set an email address, the addressused value is ignored. This problem occurs if you install Update Rollup 11 or a later version of update rollup.
  • When you export a report to Excel in offline mode in the Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 client for Outlook, the generated file name extension is invalid.
  • When you install the Critical On Demand (COD) package of hotfix 2535327, you receive the following error message:
This implementation is not part of the Windows Platform FIPS validated cryptographic algorithms.
  • In Internet Explorer 9, when you create a quick campaign by using a wizard in Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0, you receive the following error message:
An error has occurred in the script on this page.
